Stion Announces Grand Opening of New Factory in Mississippi

Company Building 100 MW Production Line in Hattiesburg

SAN JOSE, CALIF., September 16th, 2011 – Stion, a manufacturer of high-efficiency thin-film solar modules, today announced the grand opening of its new factory in Hattiesburg, MS. The company will hold an on-site ribbon-cutting ceremony this afternoon with Governor Haley Barbour and other state and local officials in attendance.

The project, which is the first thin-film solar factory in the Southeastern US, will deliver more than 1,000 jobs and $500 million of investment over the next six years. The first phase of the project includes a 100 MW line which will entail more than $100 million of investment and 200 direct jobs in 2011 and 2012.

“I am delighted to be joining Stion officials to celebrate the grand opening of the company’s new production facility in Hattiesburg,” Governor Haley Barbour said. “I am grateful to company officials for their well-founded confidence in Mississippi’s skilled workforce and in our business climate, and I am proud that in six years’ time, 1,000 Mississippians will be producing Stion’s innovative thin-film solar panels in Hattiesburg.”

Since announcing the Hattiesburg site in January, Stion has hired 100 employees locally and implemented recruiting and training programs with Pearl River Community College and the University of Southern Mississippi. Production from the project’s first phase will begin later this year.

”Our partnership with the state of Mississippi and the city of Hattiesburg has been a tremendous driving force behind our manufacturing scale-up,” said Chet Farris. “Our local employees and partners have worked hard to start up this facility on an extremely fast timeline, and we are excited to expand our US manufacturing presence in this world-class location.”

Headquartered in San Jose, Calif., Stion is producing high-efficiency, thin-film solar modules using a simple, low-cost monolithically integrated circuit design. Stion’s product has a convenient form factor (65 cm x 165 cm) and is specifically designed for use in all major market segments. Stion recently demonstrated the world’s most efficient production-scale thin-film circuit, which was verified at 14.1% efficiency by the National Renewable Energy Lab.
