Stion Celebrates 10.5MW project with Marin Clean Energy and the City of Richmond

Municipalities across the nation regularly face increases in energy costs. Over the past 10 years, US electric rates increased an average of 2.7% per year according to the International Energy Agency. In the future, annual electric rates are expected to rise even faster as the costs of upgrading the aging electric grid infrastructure are passed onto the ratepayer. These costs are estimated at $2 trillion over the next 14 years according to a study by the Rocky Mountain Institute.
In the past, municipalities have had very few options for negotiating their electric rates. They usually had to supplement long term agreements to purchase electricity with expensive spot market purchases during times of increased demand. However, due to the rapidly decreasing costs of solar energy, municipalities now have more options to lock in fixed prices for their energy through long term solar power purchase agreements.
The Stion Energy Services(SES) team has experience working with municipalities to save money by providing turn-key solar projects. For example, just recently, SES celebrated a 10.5MW solar development with Marin Clean Energy (MCE), a Community Choice Aggregator (CCA) that provides energy directly to residents residing in the Bay Area.
The 10.5MW solar farm, named Stion MCE Solar One, is being developed and constructed by SES. When completed, it will be the largest municipal solar installation in the Bay Area and is unique in that Stion/MCE also partnered with Chevron USA, who leased the land to MCE for the development. The solar farm is expected to begin construction in 2016 and be completed by the end of year. Once the project is complete, the 49-acre former brownfield will be converted into a “brightfield” – with almost 80,000 Stion solar panels that are 100% MADE IN THE USA generating clean electricity for over 3,400 homes in the neighboring community.
“MCE Solar One is the largest municipal solar project in the immediate area and is a successful example of a public/private partnership where all stakeholders benefit. We are quite pleased to be working closely with the MCE team through the development of this project, and expect that the MCE customers will realize savings on their energy costs from the solar project over the next 25 years ” said Jeffrey Cheng, CEO of Stion Energy Services. “We also plan to hire installers who reside in the City of Richmond, so there is a strong win for the local economy as well,” added Mr. Cheng.
